In
keeping with her interest of connecting young people
to the written word, author Tina McElroy Ansa has
started another exciting project: Good Lil' School
Girl Book Clubs around the state and country.
Good Lil' School Girl
is a foundation the author started about four years
ago to honor and assist women and young people in
various arenas: education, personal empowerment, writing
and publishing. career choice and volunteerism.
In the last two years,
she has established book clubs in schools (k-12),
churches and with civic groups and Job Corps around
the state. She began by donating paperback copies
of her first novel BABY OF THE FAMILY
to the group as the first book choice because it is
a novel that has a young Southern girl at its center
and is a novel that all ages can read and identify
with. For high school age groups, she has suggested
her fourth novel YOU KNOW BETTER,
whose main character is an 18-year-old girl who is
seriously “at-risk” in a number of arenas
and in need of connecting with the women in her family..
Tina McElroy Ansa has encouraged local businesses
where the book clubs have formed to sponsor the clubs
by purchasing books for the young people. This last
seems to be the best way to go.
In areas that are within
driving distance of her home on St. Simons Island,
Georgia, Ms. Ansa has tried to attend the inaugural
meeting of the book club to lead the first discussion.
Having the author there has been an exciting and motivating
factor in the clubs.
If you know of any libraries
groups or schools that would be interested in forming
their own chapters of Good Lil' School Girl Book Clubs
(We don't exclude boys! There have been a number of
young men in one of the high school age clubs.), please
let us know by completing the form below.
Happy reading!
